What are Standard Garage Door sizes?

We often have customers ringing up and asking how much is a standard garage door? Or telling us they have a ‘standard garage door size’ garage door and would like a motor fitting, for instance.

Most garage door suppliers manufacturer garage doors at a number of different sizes and all these are classed as ‘standard sizes’ and can range from 6’6″ (or 1981cm metric) wide, up to 10′ (or 3048cm metric) wide and from 6’6″ (1981cm) up to 8′ (2438cm) high for single garage doors. Double width up and over garage doors go up to 14′ wide and sectional garage doors go up to 16′ wide.

It is unusual for one of these standard garage door sizes not to fit into an opening, but if a made to measure door is absolutely necessary, this brings with it, a bit more cost! If an opening is an obscure size and a standard size door will not fit between the opening, then a slightly bigger, standard size door can be fitted behind the opening.

When looking at a new garage door for your property, it would be prudent to measure your structural opening and also measure the inside face, looking at how much room you have either side of the opening and also measure your headroom. There are many different factors to consider, ie do you want the door fitting between your brickwork, or behind the opening. We have examples of the different ways a door can be fitted in our showroom, so pop along and somebody will explain the different options. You have to bear in mind, if fitting between your brickwork, you will lose a bit of drive through width and if you choose to fit behind your opening, you will lose on length.

Lastly, look for any obstructions on the garage wall, electric/gas meters for instance. When coming down to visit our showroom, it is always handy to have your measurements to hand, taking into account your current door panel size, structural opening, reveals and headroom. Bring with you some pictures of your current door, also. This is very helpful to us when advising you!
