We can usually fit motors to most types of garage door. Usually, customers who want a new motor on their garage door, have them fitted at the same time we install their new garage door, however, sometimes either they don’t need a new motor at the time of installation, or they haven’t quite got enough money at the time. Whatever the reason, retro fitting a garage door motor at a later date is an option many people go for.
We would always visit site, to ensure that the said door was suitable for automation. There are a few reasons why a garage door may not be suitable for automation, which include, age of the door and type of garage door. If a garage door is particularly old and worn, then it may not be suitable for automation as the garage door motor wouldn’t run efficiently. If we thought this, then we would recommend the customer have a new door and offer a free site survey. We would never fit a garage door motor to a door which we deemed unsuitable. If the garage door was an up and over canopy, then this is not the ideal situation either. Again, the garage door motor would not run efficiently on a canopy garage door, due to the way the mechanism operates. We would have to use a bow arm converter kit to enable the garage door motor to lift the garage door efficiently. We would only fit these bow arm converters onto garage doors which were in an excellent condition, that were working smoothly and were strong enough to withstand the forces applied. The only downside to using a bow arm is that it restricts some of the drive-through height.
The motors we currently use are both from Hormann and are the ProMatic and SupraMatic.
